การเดาความหมายจากบริบท

          เทคนิคการเรียนรู้คำศัพท์จากบริบท ประเภทการให้คำจำกัดความ
          การให้คำจำกัดความ (Definition)
                ในการเรียนรู้คำศัพท์ยาก ผู้อ่านอาจจะอาศัยการเดาความหมายจากการให้คำจำกัดความที่ผู้เขียนได้อธิบาย ความหมายของคำศัพท์ออกมาโดยตรง โดยที่ผู้อ่านไม่จำเป็นต้องเปิดหาความหมายของคำศัพท์จากพจนานุกรม คำชี้แนะที่เป็นตัวช่วยในการบอกความหมายประเภทการให้คำจำกัดความ ได้แก่

     นอกจากนี้ยังมีเครื่องหมายวรรคตอน (Punctuations) ที่ถูกใช้เป็นตัวชี้แนะในการช่วยการเดาความหมายคำศัพท์ที่เราไม่คุ้นเคยอีก ได้แก่

     เรื่อง การให้คำตัวอย่าง (Example)
          ในการพิจารณาความหมายของคำศัพท์ที่เราไม่คุ้นเคย ผู้อ่านสามารถตีความหมายได้โดยอาศัยคำชี้แนะในบริบท ผู้เขียนอาจให้หรือยกตัวอย่างตามหลักคำศัพท์คำนั้น เพื่อให้ผู้อ่านมีความเข้าใจในความหมายของคำศัพท์นั้นดียิ่งขึ้น
      คำชี้แนะประเภทให้หรือยกตัวอย่าง (Example Type)

       1. The book deals entirely with the physical sciences, for example, geography, oceanography, and chemistry , physical sciences เป็นคำศัพท์ที่ไม่รู้ For example เป็นคำชี้แนะ Geography, oceanography, and chemistry เป็นตัวอย่างที่ผู้เขียนยกขึ้นมาอธิบาย  ดังนั้น physical sciences จึงมีความหมายว่า วิทยาศาสตร์กายภาพ ที่เกี่ยวกับวิชาภูมิศาสตร์ ที่ว่าด้วยมหาสมุทรและเคมี
        2. The ocean floor has surface features similar to those of dry land ; for instance, plains, trenches, canyons, and mountains.
        3. Since a guinea pig isn’t carnivorous, it couldn’t eat the meat.
        4. His behavior was inexplicable ; no one could explain why he was always late at school.

     เรื่อง เทคนิคการเรียนรู้คำศัพท์ยาก ประเภทการกล่าวซ้ำ (Restatement type)
     เทคนิค การเรียนรู้คำศัพท์ยากประเภทนี้ ผู้เขียนบอกความหมายของคำศัพท์ที่ไม่คุ้นเคยด้วยการกล่าวซ้ำความหมายของคำ ศัพท์ โดยใช้ภาษาที่เข้าใจง่ายขึ้น การสังเกตการณ์กล่าวซ้ำ ความหมายของคำศัพท์ที่ไม่คุ้นเคย สามารถดูได้จากตัวชี้แนะและเครื่องหมายวรรคตอน ดังนี้

- a moving staircase เป็นความหมายของคำว่า “escalator”ดังนั้น escalator ก็หมายถึง บันไดเลื่อน
- These two circles are concentric. In other words, they have the same center.
- concentric เป็นคำศัพท์ที่ไม่คุ้นเคย
- in other words เป็นคำชี้แนะ
- have the same center เป็นความหมายของคำว่า “concentric”ดั้งนั้น concentric ก็คือ จุดศูนย์กลางร่วม

- The government has to provide a new accommodation – a place to live for the people who are moving
from the slum area.
- The club members’ warmth and friendliness created a comforting ambience (atmosphere) which I
accepted eagerly.

     เรื่อง การเดาความหมายจากคำที่แสดงการเปรียบเทียบหรือขัดแย้ง (Comparison or Contrast Types)
     ในการพิจารณาความหมายของคำศัพท์ยาก ผู้เขียนอาจให้ความหมายของคำศัพท์ใหม่ด้วยการใช้คำ หรือข้อความที่มีความหมายชนิดที่เปรียบเทียบความคล้ายคลึงกัน เหมือนกัน หรือข้อความที่เปรียบเทียบสิ่งสองสิ่งในลักษณะตรงกันข้าม หากเข้าใจความหมายของสิ่งหนึ่งก็สามารถที่จะตีความหมายของอีกส่วนหนึ่งหนึ่ง ได้ แม้ว่าจะไม่ใช่ความหมายตรงๆ ของคำศัพท์ใหม่ แต่ก็ช่วยให้เข้าใจคำศัพท์ที่เป็นปัญหานั้น แบ่งออกเป็น 2 ประเภท คือ
     1. คำชี้แนะประเภทที่บอกความคล้ายคลึงแสดงความเหมือน (Comparison) คำชี้แนะ ได้แก่
as เหมือนกัน
just as……so เมื่อ...ดังนั้น...
in the same way ในทำนองเดียวกัน
like เหมือนกับ
similar to เหมือนกับ, คล้ายกับ
ตัวอย่าง
- Just as there are conflicts between several parties, so there are disagreements between functional staff
and prime minister.จากข้อความนี้จะมี Just as……, so เป็นคำชี้แนะ เมื่อพิจารณาโครงสร้างประโยคทางไวยากรณ์จะพบว่า
ประโยคแรกมี there are conflicts ส่วนประโยคหลังมี there are disagreements ดังนั้น คำว่า conflicts และ disagreements จึงมีความหมายเหมือนกัน คือ ความไม่เห็นด้วย, ความขัดแย้งกัน
      - That toy is like a lethal weappon ; the child almost killed me with it.

     2. คำชี้แนะประเภทที่แสดงถึงความแตกต่างกัน หรือขัดแย้งกัน (Contrast)คำชี้แนะประเภทที่มีลักษณะตรงกันข้ามกัน เป็นการแสดงความขัดแย้งกันอยู่ในประโยค หรืออาจเป็นการแสดงการเปรียบเทียบถึงความไม่เท่าเทียมกันของ 2 กลุ่ม คำชี้แนะประเภทนี้ ได้แก่
although / even though / though ถึงแม้ว่า
but / yet / however / nevertheless แต่อย่างไรก็ตาม
in spite of / despite ทั้งๆ ที่, แม้ว่า
on the contrary / on the other hand ในทางตรงกันข้าม
while / whereas ในขณะที่
comparing / in compare with เปรียบเทียบกันกับ
as if / as though ราวกับว่า

ตัวอย่าง
- A few weeks ago the Cambodians intruded into Thai territory at Ban Hat- Lek of  Klong Yai District
but were pushed back by the Thai forces.จะเห็นได้ว่า คำที่ขีดเส้นใต้เป็นคำศัพท์ที่เราไม่รู้ แต่เราสามารถที่จะเดาคำศัพท์นั้นโดยดูตัวชี้แนะ ซึ่งได้แก่
คำว่า but ดังนั้น ข้อความที่อยู่ข้างหลังย่อมจะมีความหมายตรงกันข้ามกับข้อความที่มาข้างหน้า ข้อความที่อยู่ข้างหลัง but นั้นมีความหมายว่า ถูกผลักดันโดยกองทัพไทย ดังนั้น คำว่า intrude จึงมีความหมายว่า “บุกรุก, ล่วงล้ำ เข้ามา”
        - Although problems of population growth in many countries have been obvious, in others they are just
incipient.
       - Constant repetition of the same TV advertisement will alienate customers rather than attract them.

       เรื่อง การเดาความหมายจากคำที่มีความหมายเหมือนและตรงกันข้าม
(Synonym and Antonym Types)

Synonym clueอาศัยความหมายของคำศัพท์ที่เหมือนกัน กับคำศัพท์ที่ไม่คุ้นเคยนั้น สามารถกระทำได้โดยการเดา และอาศัยสังเกตจาก Signal clue ต่อไปนี้ too, and, also.
